AX-5: Orion / Quest

Part of ASCII's AX series of baseline PC-6001 tape software, this compilation includes Orion, a first-person space-sim shooter a la Hadron or Star Raiders, and Quest, a maze-based dungeon crawler akin to Hunt the Wumpus. Orion has you piloting a spacecraft and dogfighting with enemy vessels for points. The game eschews earlier Star Trek-based zone control systems for a more arcade-like experience, focused entirely on fast-paced combat. Different ships offer different challenges, both in tracking and aiming. Players at the time noted this game for its impressive graphics performance and replication of vector shooters on limited hardware. Quest puts the player in a labyrinth which they must escape while defeating monsters. Using a radar to track these invisible enemies, you must collect ammunition throughout the corridors, shoot the beasts down, and reach the end unscathed. Like its companion program, this game relies on raster wireframe graphics to run smoothly.

Borderlands 3 is a first-person looter shooter set seven years after the events of Borderlands 2. Players select one of four new Vault Hunters and travel across multiple planets to stop Troy and Tyreen Calypso, twin cult leaders seeking to harness the power of alien Vaults scattered throughout the galaxy. The game features procedurally generated weapons, cooperative multiplayer for up to four players, expanded skill trees with multiple action skills per character, and new traversal mechanics including sliding and mantling.

Planet Alpha is an adventure set in a living alien world where you have the ability to manipulate the daytime. To survive on this strange planet you will have to be observant of how the environment and the wildlife behaviour changes depending on the time of day.

Rico is an arcade-style, first-person shooter inspired by modern action cinema. In the game you and a friend play as a pair of loose-cannon police partners, given twenty-four hours to crack a case as part of an elite organised crime taskforce. Planning is tactical rather than strategic, players must react in the moment to shootouts as they unfurl, with additional extra time to assess the situation if they are able to surprise their adversaries. Ammo and enemies are plentiful, and combat is punchy and impactful, supported by an extensive destruction system that ensures every shot looks and feels great.

Immortal: Unchained is a souls-inspired third-person shooter/action RPG.

2D platform game with classic platform gameplay, deadly traps, dark storyline and unique hero abilities, all in Tim Burton's-like audio-visual.

Doom Eternal is a first-person shooter developed by id Software and the sequel to Doom (2016). Players control the Doom Slayer as he fights to end a demonic invasion of Earth. Combat is built around aggressive resource management, where health, armor, and ammo are gained by executing, igniting, or chainsawing enemies. The game introduces platforming segments, destructible enemy weak points, an expanded weapon arsenal, and a multiplayer mode called Battlemode, where one player-controlled Slayer fights two player-controlled demons.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood is a brand-new co-op experience from MachineGames, the award-winning studio that developed the critically acclaimed Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. Set in 1980, 19 years after BJ Blazkowicz ignited the second American Revolution, Wolfenstein: Youngblood introduces the next Blazkowicz generation to the fight against the Nazis.
