This game was the first game released for the Sega Model 1 arcade platform, and also the first to use the name "Virtua" in its title (something which would be followed by numerous Sega arcade games, including Virtua Fighter, Virtua Cop and Virtua Tennis. It is considered a milestone in 3D graphics and the racing genre, and acts as a foundation for most modern racing games.

Virtua Racing is a polygon-based racing game in which you must beat an opponent, who is either human or computer controlled. In the conversion to the Saturn, many new features were added: 7 new tracks, which brings the total number of tracks in the game to 10. 4 new cars, which brings the total number of cars in the game to 5. The new cars are a go-kart, a Porsche 911, an F-160 racer, and a GTP-class car. A new Grand Prix mode. The Grand Prix mode is a career simulation. You must work your way up from one class of vehicle to next be accumulating points in a series of races.

Virtua Racing Deluxe is an enhanced port of Virtua Racing, released as a launch title for the Sega 32X in North America and Europe in late 1994. Much of its team was comprised of developers who had produced the port of Virtua Racing to the Sega Mega Drive, however the visuals in Virtua Racing Deluxe are far more accurate and the some music was rearranged. Naofumi Hataya also composed several new tracks for the game, in some cases replacing original themes.

Slipstream is a sprite-based Formula One racing game featuring four different race tracks; Germany, Japan, Australia and the obligatory Monaco. players can chose to race in any one of eight different F-1 racing cars, with each offering different levels of handling, acceleration, speed and grip. The game also offers three different play modes; Time Trial (raced over a single course), World Championship (raced over all four courses) and Time Trial (also raced over all four courses). Each car has a basic high and low gear. Also, as the player races the course, a 'Turbo' meter builds up. The Turbo will occasionally kick in and give the player's car a temporary speed boost. Rival cars are also able to turbo-boost.

The game is aimed at motor sport enthusiasts as there are no driving help features and it uses telemetry data also used by professionals - of course the player has a lot of options to customize his car's settings. Other features are the interactive cockpit and the physics which take real-world details into account, e.g. dirt on the tires. Single player is restricted to races against the clock, but the main aspect of the game are the online races against other players.
