While you progress through the game you will earn abilities that will help you throughout the game. Some of the abilities consist of gaining high speeds or the ability to break through obstacles to progress further in the game. Don't Knock Twice is a single-player first-person survival horror game with support for virtual reality headsets. Light combat and item elements are included, such as using an axe on doors and combining objects into makeshift tools. It shares its name with, and is loosely based on, the film of the same title.

The mystery is unravelled by replaying events and joining forces with different allies rather than by sifting through evidence directly. It is set in the same world as Stories: The Path of Destinies, of which it is the successor.
