On the remote island of Ember Watch, the Kingdom has built a tower above the source of the monster surge: the Ember, a sea of living fire beneath every land. Its heat is rising and pushing everything upward, so every monster you slay is really fleeing something deeper. You arrive on the supply ship and hunt for Captain Lorath, the only survivor of a first expedition that went down eleven winters ago. As you clear sewers, goblin camps and dragon nests, you learn his “cave-in” story hides the truth: at the Ember Gate he ran, and his companions sealed the ward with themselves on the wrong side. Across the sea, in desert Kemet, the scholar Neferkhet reads her teacher Senmut’s letters, which say the primordial waters do not drown but burn. In frozen Niflheim, the seeress Sigrid gathers her lost brother Eirik’s verses, which read Ragnarök as the Deep rising. Each land’s ward is failing, and only by finishing all three questlines can you uncover the shared truth. Together the three keepers help you relight the Ember Gate’s ward with Brannoc’s lost Cold Lantern, forge the Ward Ember, and descend into the Heart of the Deep to face the Emberheart. There you learn that Eirik is still alive, and the Kingdom is safe, for now. Beyond lies Hallowmere, where the lamplighter Brannoc guides you through the Heartborn hunt, the haunted barrows and Lantern Night, while a final island on the ship’s chart waits for its story.
