Team Fortress (TF) is a team- and class-based multiplayer online first-person shooter video game mod based on id Software's Quake Engine, and later QuakeWorld Engine. Team Fortress, also known as Quake Team Fortress (QTF), and later QuakeWorld Team Fortress (QWTF), was designed and written by Robin "Bro" Walker, John "Jojie" Cook, and Ian "Scuba" Caughley in 1996. Because of its popularity, it has spawned an endless amount of mods for not only Team Fortress, but other games as well. Valve took an interest in the Team Fortress Software organization and hired the three creators to work on a Team Fortress Half-Life mod, and later a standalone version called Team Fortress Classic (TFC), released in 1999. A standalone sequel to Team Fortress Classic, Team Fortress 2 (TF2), was developed by Valve and released in 2007.

The Pyro Update was the second major content update for Team Fortress 2. The Pyro class was the focus of this update. In addition to three new weapons, the latent Hadouken taunt was upgraded to become the first Kill taunt. The update also added compression blast to the Stock Flamethrower, an ability that would become a core technique for the class. Two community-made maps, Fastlane and Turbine, were made official and included in the update, along with a link to the Valve Developer Community site. Meet the Sniper was also introduced in a similar manner to Meet the Scout. Additionally, many improvements and fixes were included.

The Second Annu-Hell Scream Fortress Hauntdead Halloween Special, then also commonly known as the Scream Fortress Update, Following the previous year's Haunted Halloween Special, the celebration established the annual Team Fortress 2 Halloween event.

The Australian Christmas was a major content update for Team Fortress 2 and It was the first in what would later become the annual Smissmas event. A new game mode, Medieval Mode, was introduced with this update. It featured a new map, DeGroot Keep. The update also increased default backpack slots from 200 to 300, and added the ability to acquire additional slots (100 at a time) by purchasing the Backpack Expander item. The maximum backpack size became 1000 slots. As part of the event, the Festive Winter Crate was added. These were unlockable with a Festive Winter Crate Key, that was only available as a purchase from the Mann Co. Store for $2.49 / £1.99 / €2.49. This update also introduced the Itemtest map for the first time.

The Invasion Community Update was a major community-created update and event added on October 6, 2015. Announced with a community-created Source Filmmaker video, it added four new maps, one of them a themed version of 2Fort, 16 new cosmetic items, 4 weapon reskins, 9 new Invasion-themed unusual effects, and a new taunt. Also included in the update was the Invasion Community Update Pass, which allowed players to directly support the team behind the update and also granted them access to special crate drops and to the Invasion Community Update Coin, which counted kills during the event.

The WAR! Update was a class update for the Demoman and the Soldier. It was the second multi-class patch, and was the sixth major content pack released. The WAR! Update differed from previous updates by including two competitions, operating inside and outside the game. The first was announced at the start of the update; a kill tracker appeared in the HUD of anybody playing as a Demoman or Soldier, with the counter increasing each time they (as a Soldier) killed an enemy Demoman or they (as a Demoman) killed an enemy Soldier. The personal totals of each player were added to a mass tally, and with each day of the update a running total score for each side was displayed on the update page. The Soldier won with 6,406,065 total kills to the Demoman's 6,372,979, granting the Soldier the prize of an extra unlockable weapon, the Gunboats. The second competition was the Propaganda Contest. Users were encouraged to design propaganda posters for the side of their choice, supporting either the BLU Soldier or RED Demoman. The posters were then submitted to Valve to be judged through the Propaganda Contest website. The three leading prizes were later revealed to be J.Axer's Dapper Topper, Amber's Rad As All Hell Hat, and Uncle Sam (for first, second, and third place respectively).

The Jungle Inferno Update was a major update for Team Fortress 2 that spanned throughout 4 days, starting on October 16th, 2017 and finally releasing on October 20th, 2017 after a 1-day delay. It introduced 5 new weapons, 5 new community-made maps, 1 new Valve-made map, 7 new taunts, 1 new kill taunt, 49 new cosmetics (though 4 all-class items are currently unreleased), and many rebalances for existing weapons as well as the Pyro class. It also introduced an overhaul to the contract system with the ConTracker, and introduced War Paint in place of weapon skins.

The Summer 2023 Update, also labelled as simply Summer, was a major update for Team Fortress 2 that was released on July 12th, 2023. It introduced 14 new maps, 25 new cosmetic items, 10 new War Paints, 6 new taunts, and 20 new Unusual effects in total (12 for cosmetics and 8 for taunts), as well as a new community-created game mode: Versus Saxton Hale.

The Heavy Update, officially known as A Heavy Update, was the third major content update for Team Fortress 2. The focus of the update was the Heavy class. As was customary, three new weapons for the class were revealed, and the slowdown mechanic was introduced. To accompany the Sandvich consumable weapon, Meet the Sandvich was released alongside the update. A new game mode, Arena, was introduced. It focused on combat between the two teams and brought five new maps to the game. Two other maps, Badwater Basin and Steel, were also included.

The Australian Christmas 2011 update was a major content update for Team Fortress 2, released on December 15, 2011 Patch. Part 1 of the major update consisted of two item sets for the Pyro and Engineer, as well as a 'double drop week' lasting from December 15 until December 21, where the rate of drops through the item drop system was increased. It also included a new map, Foundry, as well as an achievement cosmetic, the Full Head of Steam. Part 2 added community-contributed items from the Steam Workshop, to only be obtained by unlocking a Nice Winter Crate with a Nice Winter Crate Key purchased from the Mann Co. Store. The Naughty Winter Crate contained a number of stock weapons with lights wrapped around them, including "Festive" as an added title, and required the separate Naughty Winter Crate Key to unlock. On the night of the 21st, all players were awarded a Spirit of Giving and all premium players received one free Secret Saxton.

The Replay Update was a major content update for Team Fortress 2 and the main feature of the Replay Update is the eponymous Replay tool, which allows a player to record their most recent life. The player can subsequently edit their replays to their heart's content and upload them to YouTube. In addition to the tool, a total of 13 new items were added to the game: A weapon, eleven cosmetic items, and an action item.

The Tough Break Update was a major update added in the 2015 Smissmas season that spanned from December 17, 2015 to April 11, 2016. The update introduced 4 new weapon collections, 15 community-created new cosmetics, 4 community-created new maps, and 3 new taunts. It also added the Tough Break Campaign, a three-month contract campaign which allows players to complete 26 skill-based challenges to unlock one-of-a-kind weapons and exclusive weapon and cosmetic cases. To participate in the Tough Break Campaign, players had to obtain the Tough Break Campaign Pass, which was available for purchase in the Mann Co. Store. Players were invited to fulfill contracts ostensibly handed out by Miss Pauling via postcards on her state-mandated vacation. Additional content was further added in the December 22, 2015 Patch, such as the Festivizer.

The Haunted Hallowe'en Special, officially known as the Terrifying Team Fortress Haunted Hallowe'en Special, was the first update in what would become annual Halloween events. The update was first revealed in a blog post, followed by an immediate release on October 29, 2009. Aside from fixing a few issues, the update introduced two new maps: Harvest and Harvest Event. The release of these maps was unique as it was the first time that the same map had been released in both a standard and an event variety. The patch also introduced two new hazards: the ghost of Zepheniah Mann, which was exclusive to Harvest Event, and the Pumpkin Bomb, which only appears on Halloween-themed maps. Two new cosmetics were also introduced, the Mildly Disturbing Halloween Mask and the Ghastly Gibus, as was a pack of five Halloween-themed achievements known as Scarechievements. Finally, the patch introduced the Halloween pumpkin; a special pickup item that only appears on Halloween-themed maps and randomly drops when a player is killed.

The Hatless Update was a major content update for Team Fortress 2 and the update included changes originally tested in the Team Fortress 2 Beta such as the coaching and voting systems, Training Modes for the Demoman, Engineer, and Spy, Badlands' King of the Hill mode, and several item tweaks. Other additions were the introduction of styles, dynamic model loading, and the association between servers and Steam IDs. Bots had their AI improved and duels were given the option of being class-specific. The painting and voice chat systems were also improved. A 'Sort by Rarity' option was added to the Backpack for sorting items.

The Über Update was a major content update for Team Fortress 2, It was heralded as "the biggest, most ambitious update in the history of Team Fortress 2." Similar to other major updates, like the Sniper vs. Spy Update and Engineer Update, the Über Update followed a four-day-long system of daily content previews, the last of which featured a new short, Meet the Medic.

The Mecha Update was a major update for Team Fortress 2 released on December 20th, 2012. The update was announced on December 19, 2012. It announced the addition of the final class in Mann vs. Machine, the Mecha-Engineer, as well as the map Bigrock. It further included the comic Shadow Boxers, and announced the addition of the Rescue Ranger, Loose Cannon, and the Vaccinator, new weapons for the Engineer, Demoman and Medic, respectively. Finally, the update announced the return of Nice and Naughty Winter Crates.
